Our goal is to develop and maintain an ever growing system of well built, fun, and sustainable trails that provides different lengths of Mountain Biking loops which can cater to varying skill sets and fitness levels. These are intended to be non-motorized trails, open to mountain bikers, hikers, runners, plus xcountry skiers or snowshoeing in the winter.

Members of Velo MSM will strive to maintain and expand the current network over the coming years. There are some exciting plans for this area to make it a staple of the Ottawa-Gatineau mountain bike scene. Velo MSM is also affiliated with the Ottawa Mountain Biking Association (OMBA), the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA), and the Federation quebecoise des sports cyclists (FQSC).

Velo MSM is made up of a group of mt bike enthusiasts that volunteer their time to work tirelessly on executing this vision. Key stakeholders that Velo MSM relies upon for its success include the MSM land owners, the local Municipality, other granting organizations, and a wider group of volunteers that help with trail building and our Mountain Fest. Thank you to all for helping us make this beautiful location our trail playground.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider color=”#f9aa3c” divider_position=”center” divider_weight=”3px” _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” max_width=”100px” module_alignment=”center” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_divider][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=”row” _builder_version=”4.16″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ text_font=”Poppins||||||||” text_text_color=”rgba(255,255,255,0.7)” text_font_size=”18px” header_3_text_color=”#ffffff” header_3_font_size=”30px” background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” module_alignment=”left” global_colors_info=”{}”]

About the Trails

For Ottawa-Gatineau mt. bikers who have been limited in their access to the amazing terrain provided by the Gatineau Hills, Mont Ste Marie will be a welcome surprise. There is almost 1500 ft of vertical available, with many great look outs, lakes, streams and beautiful forest.

Our trails are being designed by Ottawa-Gatineau’s finest trail builders. This helps make them fun, fast, flowy, and sustainable. The trails are being planned to provide riders with a big mountain experience offering technical and challenging riding. Additionally, beginner and intermediate loops exist at the base of the mountain and around the local lake (and beach) so that people can get into the sport in a friendly and fun way at Mont Ste Marie.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider color=”#f9aa3c” divider_position=”center” divider_weight=”3px” _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” max_width=”100px” module_alignment=”center” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_divider][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=”row” _builder_version=”4.16″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.4″ text_font=”Poppins||||||||” text_text_color=”rgba(255,255,255,0.7)” text_font_size=”18px” header_3_text_color=”#ffffff” header_3_font_size=”30px” background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” module_alignment=”left” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

History

Velo MSM was created in 2009 by a group of community members at Mont Ste Marie who wanted to create a recreational trail network in the region that took advantage of the beautiful hills, lakes, and forests in the region to for an exciting and sustainable experience for all users. Since then, thousands, of hours have been put into developing a multi-use/multi-season recreational trail network at Mont Ste-Marie (MSM), in Lac Ste-Marie, Quebec.
Trail building continued in 2010 with the addition of Peter Verheyden, Ottawa-Gatineau’s most renowned and accomplished trail builder. His vision helped lead Velo MSM in the direction that we have taken, striving to become a premier mountain bike destination in Canada.

2011 was an exciting year for Velo MSM. The group became an official chapter under Club MSM, and were successful with a proposal to the local municipality of Lac Ste-Marie for $55,000 in trail building funds. In addition, Velo MSM also succeeding in assembling the land owners, explaining our long term vision, and proposing an intricate and engaging trail network. This proposal achieved their overwhelming support and signed access to develop the trails. Also in that year, Velo MSM designed and refined a trail network of over 40 kms of future trail with potential for growing into something much larger. Twenty (20) trail days were organized and thousands of volunteer hours were amassed to improve the existing trails and build new ones. With the help of our funding, we put together and managed a full time paid crew of five (5) trail builders. With this great foundation to work from, it was determined by all involved that the future for mountain biking at Mont Ste-Marie is very bright.

In 2012, Velo MSM was successful in securing additional grant funding, which meant a trail crew was employed for a second year in a row. 2012 saw the completion of the Lake Loop trail network, and the commencement of a trail going up the mountain, Taylor’s Tower of Power, better known as “TTOP.”
New funding partners were secured in 2013, through Mountain Equipment Co-op and the Federal Government’s Economic Action Plan. This funding enabled further trail crew work on TTOP. Interest in riding at MSM amongst local mountain bike riders and those further afield grew considerably. Volunteer trail days continued the strong tradition of targeting a grassroots support network for building outstanding single track at MSM. In 2013, we also hosted a hugely successful IMBA Canada trail day, with 60+ volunteers in attendance. IMBA noted it was the biggest turnout ever for their sponsored trail days.

Velo MSM Future: 2014/2015

The group of volunteers that lead Velo MSM are enthusiastic to build on the success already achieved. More fundraising will be the focus so that we can continue to have a trail crew to support the development of even more trails. Our current objective is to build some trails down the mountain, and additional trails at the top of the mountain. As the network expands, we must also focus on annual trail maintenance.

["post-45835","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
